The Trebbia river

The Trebbia river rises from the slopes of the Mount Prelà (mt. 1406) one of the peaks which forms the important orographic knot of the Mount Antola. At first it flows into a little valley parallel to the ridge which separates the basin of Torriglia from the Trebbia Valley; beyond the Buffalora gallery it bends northwards and it is enriched by numerous streams which flow down from the two slopes.

Once the Brugneto stream used to flow into the Trebbia river near Montebruno, , with the wide impluvium of the southern slope of the Mount Antola. In 1959 a dam was built to form a vast artificial basin. The Brugneto lake, on which the communes of Propata and Rondanina and part of the commune of Torriglia overlook, has notably influenced the valley. The increase of damp air has favoured the development of shrubby plants which, due to abandonment of woods, have invaded grounds once bound to haymaking and pasture.
Near Montebruno the Trebbia river has a big water capacity: in 1537 Giustiniani wrote the "Descrittione" dedicated to the  Trebbia Valley: "And past the col (...)the Trebbia river has origin from three small brooks."
From the left slope, in Due Ponti village, the virgin waters of the Cassingheno stream flows into the Trebbia river, running through the picturesque homonym valley where Fascia is located.
Other streams runs through valleys and get into depth: the Terenzone,  rising from the Eastenr slopes of the Mount Carmo (mt 1640), flows into the Trebbia river near Gorreto. It forms a green valley in which the picturesque villages of Alpe, Bertassi, Fontanarossa and Varni are found.
From the Mount Ronconovo (mt 1523), in the group of the Mount Alfeo (mt 1650), the Dorbera river flows down, while the Boreca river runs into the wide and silent basin among the Alfeo, the Cavalmurone (m 1670) and Lesima Mountains (mt 1724) . These valley villages, hidden by the greenness, form the commune of Zerba: boundless woods of chestnut trees, beech trees, hornbeams entirely cover up the slopes by the sour and wild features.
The Avegnone stream flows into the Trebbia river near the Organasco Bridge, surrounded by the Mount Lesima and the orographic knot of the Mount Penice. It forms a valley, part of Pavia Province, at the end of  which the commune of Brallo di Pregola is located.
On the other hand the Avegnone valley is open on cultivated grounds such as vineyards and it features several villages.
From the right slopes smaller streams flow into the  Trebbia river: the Sermigliasca stream forms the valley where Canale and Casoni are found; the Pescia flows down from the wide and tormented basin of Fontanigorda and Casanova.
Beyond Rovegno numerous streams, flow down into the Trebbia river from the right bank but the watershed line of the Aveto Valley is close and therefore their course is brief.
From Organasco Bridge the Trebbia river course suddenly changes direction, pointing towards Northeast and meeting the Aveto river in Confiente after a steep gorge where some meanders can be admired among the most picturesque ones of the valley.
Right after this confluence the Trebbia River, enriched of water, returns flowing  northwards and after the brief line of the Marsaglia plain, it is surrounded by banks dominated by the Brugnello fortress, the more spectacular landscape of the valley.
The outstretching hill above the river on which the inhabited area of San Salvatore rises , announces the Bobbio plain .
The  Trebbia valley  is included  in a long arc-shaped embrace of mountains which, from  the watershed line of the Torriglia Commune, directs the river course from its spring to Bobbio, becoming hill and spreading itself slowly into the plain.
