In
past times Montebruno, important village set on the left
side of the Trebbia River, was an active marketplace.
Core of a settlement whose origins go back to ancient
times, Montebruno has got the richest history of all
the villages in the upper Trebbia Valley.
There has been a castle since the 11th century and in 1164 Federico Barbarossa gave
the stronghold "Castrum Montisbruni" to Obizzo Malaspina. Up
to 1547 Montebruno was fief to the Fieschis and then to the Dorias who
got the coinage right in 1668 and they kept this possession up to the
end of the 18th century when it was given to the Republic of Genoa. The Dorias
built a three-arches bridge which links up the town centre to the Sanctuary
of Nostra Signora di Montebruno, set on the right side of the river. The church,
along with the Augustinian Friary, was raised in 1486 after the Madonna
apparition to a dumb young shepherd who recovered the capability of speech.
The façade decoration with pilasters and tympanum goes back to 1897,
while the interior, with three naves, rich marbles and stucco works,
keep the wooden-made above said Madonna of the miracle, a carved marble
tabernacle from 1500 and, among votive offerings, pieces of ropes from
the Andrea Doria’s galleys. |
The Augustinian Friary, by ample spaces,
houses the most beautiful museum of country life in Liguria,
articulated in different sections: handicraft of the past,
working cycles of the countryside, typical shed
of the zone, kitchen furnished in country style, ancient means
of transport and an old mill.
Montebruno’s location, close to the intersection of two
historical crossing itineraries and the presence of the Sanctuary
as destination of pilgrims coming from far , have affected
the village development that is different from others in its
urban structure.
The importance of the territorial infrastructures constituted
by the road axis that meet up here, has favoured string-shaped
settlements, along the two main routes.
The clean cut of the state road, sets down south in comparison
to the old route, change completely the original balance of
the urban plant, causing an evident fracture of it. |
