Trebbia Valley's medicinal herbs |
The Val Trebbia flora gives us several spontaneous medicinal
herbs. In ancient times they were object of commercial trade.
This section is dedicated to common herbs you can find on
meadows, in woods and along roads.
During the herb picking-up you are recommended to :
- Make sure about the herb identity and dropping it if
not recognised.
- Knowing the period during which the herb keeps the highest
concentration of active principles
knowing the period during which
the herb keeps the highest concentration of active
principles (balmy period).
- Knowing the picking-up age: the full development of annual
herbs occurs after blooming, while for multi-years herbs,
we recommend you choose the middle age ones.
You can get several different domestic medicines from the
herbs, here are the easiest to get prepared:
MACERATED: soak the herb for 48 hours or more in a suitable
liquid (water, white wine), shake it from time to time and
filter it through a cloth.
INFUSION: pour hot water on the herb powder. Cover up the
recipient and shake it till it cools down. Then filter it
and add hot water to compensate evaporated water till you
obtain the desired quantity.
DECOCTIONS: put small-sized herbs
into the water and boil it for 15-20 minutes if they are
flowers or small roots and 35-40 minutes if they are big
roots or bark. Filter the liquid when it is still hot and
add desired water. Decoctions are generally prepared at 5%
that’s 5 gr of herb powder
for 100 gr water.
HERB TEAS: these teas are more watery therefore they have
got less active principles than the above mentioned drinks
so that you can drink them as often as normal tea. Hereby
in alphabetical order you will find the most common medicinal
herbs, which part of them you can use, the way you can prepare
them and their properties.
