Pentema Crib

Pentema Crib
The crib is the attraction that made Pentema famous. Projected and created by the Parish, the Recreation & Sporting Club and the Services Co-operative , this crib has a double purpose: making friends come back to town, gathering people in Pentema during months of biggest abandonment and introducing Pentema to a wider public. The first purpose has been achieved with enthusiasm and sacrifice by numerous volunteers who liven up the village in October, November and December. The second purpose is worth of attention because Pentema really deserves to be known. For decades Pentema has remained in almost a total isolation due to  difficult communications and this has given the chance to preserve its features unchanged.
Pentema is the most characteristic historical centre in the Commune of Torriglia and  Province. The crib makes the atmosphere of  Nativity live again, set in the village among arcs, alleys, houses, balconies, farmyards and intact old cobbled pavings.
The historical era featured through an accurate and careful reconstruction of environments and crafts is the end of the 19th century.
The life-sized characters are dressed up in ancient dresses, set in moments of daily life and represented in the parts of the village where people really used to work.
Eventually the Crib wants to valorize the village roots  pointing out a return to the origins, and wants to make think about the popular religiousness that has had so much influence in the identity of mountainous communities in the Ligurian hinterland.
The crib is open every day from Christmas Eve to Epiphany. From half December to the end of January it is open on Saturdays and on Sundays.
Opening Hours: 10-18. Booking for school-students: Ph 010 944507.

Pentema belongs to the Commune of Torriglia. One gets there taking the National Road 45 that gradually dominates the whole Torriglia basin. Past the mountain pass one will see a wonderful scenery that goes from the glittering sea to the whiteness of the Maritime  Alps. Proceeding the village is there, among the trees of the ridge: a group of little houses tightly around a massive church, with the bell tower standing upwards the sky.
Curve after curve under a gallery of trees, one goes down to the village. During the visit to the village one will see remarkable old stony bridges, dry walls,  houses leaning one against another, in a flourish of architectural solutions.
It is the land of the Traversos and the Bevilacquas whose efforts and talent have left tangible signs of their passage and their humble and genuine happiness: they could  adapt themselves to these difficult places doing everything one can to make them more hospitable and less cruel. Also the descendants are stubborn people, determined and ready to sacrifices and hard works to maintain Pentema and his fractions alive: Buoni, Pezza, Tinello, Serre and Costapianella, and the ancient traditions such as the village fair that since over two centuries every year, on the second Sunday of August, gathers the whole valley around a small wooden effigy of the Madonnina, conserved carefully and with devotion in the big church.
